Gerard Way won a prize, in the third grade, while enrolled at Number Four Elementary School in Belleville, New Jersey, for creating a drawing depicting a large playground filled with children, most likely his age, playing various sports that he himself had never played, such as badminton, archery, and field hockey. His depiction placed third, earning him a certificate and his photograph in the Belleville Times, though the reporting journalist misspelled his name as "Gerard Waigh." Despite this oversight, he was not discouraged from drawing and continues to do so to this day, along with his wife, Lindsey; their daughter, Bandit; and their French bulldog, Susan Michelle, in Southern California.
